Tips for a Healthy Smile while Traveling for the Holidays

Smiling man carrying luggage The holidays are a busy time of the year, especially if you plan on traveling. Unfortunately, your dental health can suffer the consequences of your hectic schedule. The holidays are already a bad time for your oral health. If you don’t give your mouth the attention it needs, even while you’re away from home, it can lead to unpleasant news the next time you see your dentist. Here are 5 tips to keep your teeth and gums healthy while traveling for the holidays.

1. Create a Travel Dental Kit

Sticking to your daily routine can be difficult when you’re not at home. You may forget to brush your teeth before heading to bed or skip flossing if you’re on the road. Poor oral hygiene for even a couple of weeks can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

You can make it easy to brush and floss while on the go by creating a travel oral hygiene kit. Besides a toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste, don’t forget to pack any cleaning products for any dental appliances.

2. Brush and Floss

If you snack more often during the holidays, unwanted weight gain isn’t the only concern. Your teeth will be exposed to cavity-causing residue more frequently. Strive to brush your teeth after every meal. Brush all surfaces for at least 2 minutes. Floss at least once a day to remove the buildup your toothbrush couldn’t reach.

3. Watch What You Eat

The holidays are full of mouthwatering foods, which often contain sugars and starches. Not to mention, you might grab a quick snack at the airport or from a gas station. Unhealthy eating habits can cause tooth decay. It’s best to moderate sugars and starches to prevent cavities.

4. Chew Sugarless Gum

Chew sugarless gum to keep your mouth moist and clean. Chewing increases saliva production to inhibit oral bacteria growth while cleansing your teeth between brushing and flossing.

5. Schedule a Cleaning and Checkup

Schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist before you leave. Your dental hygienist will clean your teeth to ensure they look their best. Your dentist will look for any untreated dental issues, like gum inflammation or weakened enamel. They’ll provide the prompt treatment you need to prevent a small concern from turning into a dental emergency while you’re away.

Don’t let the holidays come back to haunt your smile. Give your teeth and gums a little extra attention to keep your mouth healthy throughout the holidays and into the new year.
